1. What is an MP3?

An MP3 is an encoded audio file and is the most common file format for digital music. MP3 supports fixed and variable bit rates from 32 to 320 kbs. Furthermore, MP3s can be compressed further which makes the MP3 format appropriate for streaming. Popular MP3 players are Winamp (www.winamp.com) and iTunes (www.apple.com).

MP3 files generally have an .mp3 extension.

2. What is an Ogg Vorbis file?

Ogg Vorbis is an audio compression format which supports fixed and variable bit rates from 32 to 320 kbs. Ogg Vorbis supporters claim the format features better sound quality and has a smaller file size. It it similar to the MP3 format but Ogg Vorbis differs in that it is free, open source, and un-patented. Winamp 2.8 (www.winamp.com) now supports Ogg Vorbis.

4. What is FreeDB and why is it useful?

FreeDB (www.freedb.org) is an open source online database of over 800,000 CDs. Buzzsaw CD Ripper uses this database to retrieve artist, CD and track information. This means that When you put a CD into your drive, Buzzsaw can (if you have selected this option) automatically retrieve the artist, album, song and track order of the cD. Buzzsaw will name each MP3, Ogg or WAV based on the naming options you have specified.

We choose to support FreeDb over CDDB because FreeDb is a comparable and open source effort. CDDB is beginning to impose user and developer registration and licensing requirements that make the whole experience more invasive and time-consuming. The more people and applications that support the FreeDb effort, the more complete the FreeDb database will be.

For a full definition, see the glossary.
